RAR GROUP CONTINUES TO GROW

The RAR Group's 2021 Annual Report, presented today (available in Relatórios e Contas | Grupo RAR), continues the growth trend of recent years, despite the particularly challenging economic environment experienced during the year in question. Consolidated net sales amounted to 809 million euros, with EBITDA of 72 million euros and net income of 16.2 million euros.

In the Chairman’s opening note, Nuno Macedo Silva highlighted “the growth performance of the RAR Group, in a year in which the pandemic set the pace of the world economy”, while also underlining the “multiple projects under development, restructuring and expansion”. “Maintaining comfortable operating ratios, the financial debt at the end of 2021 was 171 million euros”, added the Chairman of the RAR Group. From the perspective of the group's structure, an important development was the spin-off of Colep, which transformed the Packaging and Consumer Products divisions into two independent companies.

The RAR Group continues to assert itself as a reference in the Portuguese business landscape. It all started with the sugar business, which marks 60 years of life, an origin that remains alive in the acronym RAR - Refinarias de Açúcar Reunidas. In these six decades, not only does the original venture live on, but it also gave rise to an economic group that expanded its activity far beyond the food area, diversifying into the packaging, consumer goods, real estate and services sectors. This dynamic has led to a presence, in addition to Portugal, in nine other countries on three continents.

Colep Consumer Products Portugal, S.A.: Incorporated on July 1, 2021 from the spin-off of Colep. It is focused on product innovation in the “Cosmetics” and “Personal Care” categories. It recorded sales of 251 million euros, achieving an EBITDA of 23.8 million euros in 2021. The investment in the “Liquids and Creams” segment stands out, in addition to important investments in the facilities in Portugal and Poland. In Mexico, the Santiago de Querétaro unit, which supplies the North and Central American markets, reached the milestone of 50 million units produced. It was also in 2021 that the partnership initiated in 2013 with the “Albatha Group” from the United Arab Emirates ended, a reflection of the company's reorientation towards the European and American markets. It currently has around 1400 employees.

Colep Packaging Portugal, S.A.: Incorporated on July 1, 2021 from the spin-off of Colep. It is focused on the various markets and sectors of packaging. It registered growth, supported by the increase in consumption in some segments, such as aerosols and packaging for paints and varnishes. It posted sales of 119 million euros, achieving an EBITDA of 26.8 million euros in 2021. It currently has around 700 employees.

Vitacress, Ltd: Acquired in 2008, it operates in the fresh produce market, focusing on “ready-to-eat” salads and fresh herbs in Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. It managed to increase sales in all markets, despite difficulties arising from the shortage of skilled labour and the challenging agricultural year in southern Europe and the UK. It posted sales of 172 million euros (148 million British pounds), achieving an EBITDA of 17.5 million euros (15.1 million British pounds) in 2021. It currently has around 1500 employees.

RAR - Refinarias de Açúcar Reunidas, S.A.: Since 1962 it has been dedicated to the refining and marketing of sugar. The sharp rise in the cost of raw materials and the price of maritime transport affected the 2021 financial year. Even so, it registered a growth in sales, which reached 76 million euros, achieving an EBITDA of 88 thousand euros in 2021. It currently has around 160 employees.

ACEMBEX - Comércio e Serviços, Lda.: Founded in 1970 as a result of an association between Tate & Lyle International (U.K.) and RAR, from the 1980s onwards it became 100% owned by the RAR Group. It is dedicated to the international trade of raw materials for the agri-food industry, having handled, in 2021, around 750 thousand tonnes. It achieved a 22% share of the national market, which makes Acembex the largest importer of cereals and co-products in the country. It registered a growth in sales, which reached 188 million euros, achieving an EBITDA of 897 thousand euros in 2021. It currently has 15 employees.

RAR Imobiliária, S.A.: It was founded in 1987 to manage the real estate assets of the RAR Group, an activity that was later extended to the development of residential real estate projects aimed at the high end of the market. 2021 was positive, despite the continuous increase in the materials’ prices and the shortage of labour caused, essentially, by the pandemic. The company has ongoing projects in Lisbon, Porto, Braga and Vila do Conde. It recorded a growth in sales, which reached 10 million euros, achieving an EBITDA of 3.4 million euros. It currently has 19 employees.

The RAR Group in summary: It is one of Portugal’s main economic groups, with a diversified business portfolio and a presence in the areas of packaging, consumer goods, food, real estate and services. In 2021, it posted sales of 809 million euros, employing a total of 3800 people. It is present in Portugal, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom.
